What is Ethereum Classic?
Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the original Ethereum blockchain that kept running after the network split in 2016. After The DAO hack, most of the community chose to “roll back” the transaction history and created a new network — today’s Ethereum (ETH). Supporters of the “code is law” principle stayed on the original chain, which became Ethereum Classic.
ETC supports smart contracts like Ethereum but keeps mining and a fixed issuance model. For many it is the blockchain where an immutable history is the core value.
How does the Ethereum Classic network work?
After Ethereum moved to Proof-of-Stake in 2022, Ethereum Classic stayed on Proof-of-Work with the Etchash algorithm, and some miners moved here. A new block is produced roughly every 13 seconds. Issuance is limited: the block reward drops by 20% every 5 million blocks, and the total ETC supply will not exceed about 210.7 million coins.
How is ETC different from ETH?
ETH is the coin of the Proof-of-Stake Ethereum network with a huge DeFi and token ecosystem. ETC is the coin of the original Proof-of-Work chain with capped issuance. Addresses on both networks look the same (0x...), but they are different blockchains: never send ETC to an ETH deposit address or vice versa.
What drives the Ethereum Classic price?
