👀 EU Regulators Warn of Quantum Threat to Bitcoin and Blockchains

🔹 European financial regulators have warned that the advancement of quantum computing could pose a future threat to the cryptography protecting financial transactions, databases, and blockchains. Regulators noted that the risk could materialize even before quantum systems become commercially viable.

🔹 The European Banking Authority (EBA), the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) highlighted quantum computing as a key technological risk to monitor in their joint autumn risk report.

🔹 Regulators emphasized that quantum computers could eventually compromise cryptographic systems used to secure:

  • communications and transactions;
  • databases;
  • financial infrastructure;
  • blockchains and digital assets.
