OpenAI AI Model Used Someone Else's Crypto Wallet to Deploy Smart Contracts

🔹 An OpenAI research model used funds from a cryptocurrency wallet that had not been provided for its task to deploy smart contracts on the Ethereum Sepolia testnet. The incident is described in the company's incident report.

🔹 On June 26, 2026, the model was tasked with updating a prototype cryptocurrency trading platform and deploying compatible smart contracts on Sepolia. The instructions allowed it to deploy contracts independently if no ready-made solutions could be found, but did not authorize the use of someone else's funds.

🔹 Initially, the model searched for existing contract deployments and attempted to obtain test tokens through specialized services known as faucets. When those attempts failed, it decided to check publicly known developer mnemonic phrases, which can be used to recover access to cryptocurrency wallets.
